Re: [Yasmin_discussions] artists and atoms: fission and fusion

Dear Yasminers,

I follow with this special discussion here in spain, concerning the closing
of a nuclear plant. This controversia is developing, at least, with three
interestings points:

1) Prime minister is in the tune to close Garoña central because it was in
their electoral agenda (Garoña has cumplised with all of their usefull life
hours), so he had electoral compromise, but it seems that he is going to
wait a couple of years to give the order (next 5th July ends the exploit
license).

2) Industrial minister: He says that "nuclear power is irreplaceable
nowadays" and, unless he said that nuclear plants must be closed with the
most social consensus, it seem that industrial sector has not same problems
and controversies with nuclear power.

3) There is social moviment aroun this topic. Some ecologic groups are
collecting signatures to promote the closing. They create a special
Manifesto. It is really interesting that lot of famous people from culture
are in this Manifesto. People from Cinema, from Music, Writers, ... .

One of the sentences that appears in some news (from Luis Gonzalez,
ecologistas en Acción) is (i put the original, and afterward try to
translate):

"Follow to play russian roulette or to put in practice precaution
principle?."

numerosas organizaciones sociales, ecologistas, sindicales, vecinales,

I think this is a social event related to our discussion and i thought that
could be nice to share with you. We can evaluate which is the feeling from
society to nuclear power, what are the bussiness projections to the fision
energy, and what are the perception from society, from culture.

In my opinión, here in spain it seems that we have two sepparate cultures,
culture form bussines and culture form ecologics, and it is not clear that
this problem is builded in a dialogue atmosphere, as it seems a kind of
power and energy battle. At the same time cultural celebrity are engaged in
a ecologistic way and society are under consultation only with these special
"referendums" like this manifesto. I don´t know if all of these political
strategies really help to understand something or are only a way to do
things, for example to close a nuclear plant.

I think we can incorporate in our sicence communication group some nuclear
energy forum or activity, it really would be very nice to see how people
from differents "angles" react to this topic when we have alternative ways
to communicate this energy. Let´s see.

Guillermo.
