ahah! yeah, of course, they couldn't "see" them. which reminds me of
Paul Virilio, Zygmunt Bauman, Kevin Robins, the myth of the frontier
and a number of early thinkers of info viz: "seeing" is necessary to
"knowing." The lack of visibility is an instance of the unknown, and
therefore, is a considerable source of fear and anxiety. I believe
Bauman mentions Febvre observing what it was like to live in the city
pre-street lights: you couldn't see the end of the street, meaning
that a lot of mysterious and dangerous things could happen to you.

going back to Colette, if seeing is knowledge, then it makes sense to
"recompose phenomena's acts like the reality" . in some cases
discussed so far, this "reality" is extracted from data or thanks to
software, but it still "acts" as reality.

also, I pasted below a paragraph from Avi's post that fascinated me
and which I find quite pertinent to this section of the discussion.
Seeing as knowledge as domination and control.
