there was a lot of discussion about this at SIGGRAPH in the 1990's
between the Hollywood mob (emulation) and the strict scientific
visualisation people (simulation). The latter eventually split off to
form their own conference.

Could I also comment that it's necessary to distinguish between
simulation and visualisation which are often conflated and confused.
This brings into the dialogue not only issues to do with the integrity
and authenticity of the simulation but also the verisimilitude of the
visualisation process.
