[Yasmin_discussions] Water

Dear All

I have been doing some work with Dr Simon Rundle a marine biologist at University of Plymouth who has been regularly collaborating with artists/researchers Deborah Robinson and David Strang and together they are exploring the art and science of a snail found at the threshold between fresh and seawater in many different parts of Europe, called Radix Balthica or the Wandering Snail. It is rumoured to get around on the feet of ducks. It is suggested that its movement within freshwater rivers may reflect changes in sea levels .....rise in salinity of rivers.....and so act as a small but fascinating indicator of climate change. The marine biology institute has been doing some advanced observation of the snail at embryo stage which makes for hypnotic, compelling viewing:

I thought Yasminers may find the intimacy of this thought-provoking.....we're working on some exhibition/field laboratory ideas currently relating both to the scientific images but also connecting to Deborah and David's work with video, sound and software/data.....what can snail migration teach us about our shifting coastal ecologies?

best wishes

Hi Yasminers, Hi Roger,

Indeed, we need to look at the oceans more seriously. What strikes me currently are the many projects related to Algae: in science, in art, in design and in business.

But today, I am interested in this French scientist, Christian Sardet, who took part in the Tara Oceans research project (among other researches) and who put together this beautiful book and web site to attract people attention to the plankton, at the basis of the food chain and the oxygen we breathe.
