Re: [Yasmin_discussions] STEM TO STEAM- CALL for EXAMPLES

I sit on the board of the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena, California, which three years ago launched a highly successful art/math program called "Artful Connections with Math" ( http://bit.ly/PLxg6B ). As the name implies, this program uses art as a vehicle to teach math principles and pairs artists with math teachers in the classroom.

Just as important as the direct teaching of STEM/STEAM subjects, I believe, is the employment of art to impassion people and groups of all ages, and to redefine science as an emotional connection to existence. The NSF would be wise to promote art for the poeticization of science as vigorously as they do the actual teaching of science. The emotional dimension may be viewed as a means to attract young people to science not only because they are intellectually wired for it, but also because they are so deeply moved by it. People vote, and science suffers or flourishes because of how they vote -- so the goal should be not just more scientists, but an impassioned public. The latter may be better achieved in an art gallery than in a classroom. The Williamson Gallery at Pasadena's Art Center College of Design has employed such a perspective in a series of exhibitions and artist/scientist collaborations, and is presently organizing REALSPACE which will open in October. Recent exhibi!
tions include PAGES, WORLDS, ENERGY, TOOLS, OBSERVE, In the Dermisphere, and NEURO, among others. Some links are:

Yasminers

I will be attending this interesting workshop sponsored by the US
National Science Foundation which will be exploring innovative
ways of training future scientists and engineers using projects
that are based in the arts design and humanities ( STEM to STEAM)

If any yasminers have projects that you would like me to bring
to the attention of the group ( a report will be written and submitted
to the US National Science Foundation please post them to this'
list and I will make sure they are included
