[Yasmin_discussions] crowd sourcing of preservation of new media art

Jon

want to pick up your comment about crowdsourcing of preservation that
is developed in your and ricks book
http://re-collection.net/
in the chapter on the Unreliable Archivist

by coincidence i was just reading material (in french) about what
bernard stiegler call "amatorat" or the new
organised forms of amateur activity that merges with the activities of
professionals= from citizen science,
to the hacker and maker movements, smart citizen movements but also
organised patient groups who
collect data and of course the classic boinc collective actitivies
which contribute in professional ways
to science.-

there is a good essay by stiegler in Alliage:
http://revel.unice.fr/alliage/index.html?id=3272
but a search on 'amatorat' finds the recent discussions in french- i
think he coined the work
amatorat, and he uses it to distinguishe it from amateurs ( there is a
big different between a sunday painter
and a hacker that develops new media tools in open source collectives)

collecting vintage computer games as you point out for instance is
not an area museums are very active in ( barely)
and the conservation/restoration skills are really in the hands of
private game players that have
been accumulating games and platforms

with on line new media we are indeed in the era of the distributed
cloud archive- one might hope
that one could develop aggregation mechanisms to preserve the web
sites of some of the
very active groups that are exhibiting work- and in that environment
emulation is often the best
approach

a hundred years ago paul otlet, a developer of the dewey decimal
system, conceived of his Mundaneum
his 1914 pamphlet

The International Centre organises collections of world-wide
importance. These collections are the International Museum, the
International Library, the International Bibliographic Catalogue and
the Universal Documentary Archives. These collections are conceived as
parts of one universal body of documentation, as an encyclopedic
survey of human knowledge, as an enormous intellectual warehouse of
books, documents, catalogues and scientific objects. Established
according to standardized methods, they are formed by assembling
cooperative everything that the participating associations may gather
or classify. Closely consolidated and coordinated in all of their
parts and enriched by duplicates of all private works wherever
undertaken, these collections will tend progressively to constitute a
permanent and complete representation of the entire world (Union of
International Associations, 1914, p. 116).[3]

perhaps crowdsourcing and cloud archives offer a way of achieving his,
somewhat scary totalising, vision in a less totalising decentralised
way !

[Yasmin_discussions] Unauthorized preservation: the outer space edition

Crowdsourcing preservation is an important theme of Re-collection. As
museum and library budgets have shrunk, the number of media formats
has proliferated, with the consequence that it's extremely difficult
for a single institution's staff to document and preserve all the
works in its collection. A chapter called "Unreliable Archivists"
examines the trend toward curatorial crowdsourcing, in everything from
mounting photography shows to writing emulators for vintage games.
