because this issue of Mapping and Sensing is very interesting and there are
artists engaging with GIS, some noted.
The Cultural dimension of Ecosystem Services Assessment opens up a
significant opportunity for artists to engage and develop a critical
relation between spatialising tools and creative methods - we might note
some vectors of challenge if we recognise characteristics of eco art
practices -
Firstly that they tend to come out of a desire for ecocultural wellbeing
and value the agency of all things and acknowledge the way 'services' might
flow in multiple directions, not only towards human society.
Secondly that their form of interdisciplinarity is inflected with feminism
/ post-colonialism / co-production and tends to understand everything and
everyone as knowledge actors.
Thirdly to often involve volunteering ( and here I use that word rather
than participation or social practice intentionally)
And fourthly and very linked with the third point they have education
embedded - so many eco art projects have very significant learning
trajectories - usually starting with the artist being a learner (and
avowing that role from the outset).
