Another example of "Art and Science at environmental and ecological field
stations and marine labs", also from Finland.

Climate Whirl artist-in-residency at Hyytiälä Forestry Field Station, of University of Helsinki
started as a pilot project in 2012. The location of the research station is naturally, in the middle of a boreal forest!

Climate Whirl is a dialogue between science, art and education. It aims at introducing a holistic view on climate and ecosystem research and to increase public awareness on the interactions between climate and forests, as well as on the role of boreal forests in climate change. The scientific core or the project is based on the studies of ecosystem-climate interactions carried out at the SMEAR (Station for Measuring Environmental Atmosphere Relations). The project combines scientific and artistic research and introduces the results of this trans-disciplinary approach by organizing workshops, seminars and exhibitions.

The artist-in-resident counts with the help of a nominated scientific mentor, who is familiar with the research at the station.

The first artist-in-residence was organized in 2013-14, after a call for shortlisted artists. German artist Agnes Meyer-Brandis was invited to work at the station.

The artwork Teacup Tool, resulting of the Agnes residency, was awarded in 2015 Ars Electronica Prixars competition, in the category of Hybrid Art, and exhibited in ARS Linz exhibition couple this September.

As a part of the residency a 3-day Tealemetree Workshop, led by Agnes was celebrated with international group of participants from arts and sciences.

Last April the second workshop "The Art of Measuring the Woods" at Hyytiälä took place, led by forest scientists and Finnish artist Mari Mäki-Korsu.
