[Yasmin_discussions] "YASMIN opportunity: Art and Science at environmental and ecological field stations and marine labs"

erich et yasminers

thanks for presenting to us the work at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of
the Helsinki University in Lapland/Finland as part of our discussion on
the recent emergence of art science projects in field stations and marine labs

another prominent example is the work of the Harrisons who have a '50
year' project under
way at the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAGEHEN CREEK RESEARCH STATION
(details below)

i jokingly refer to this as their plan migration project -since it
involves replaning
plants that are not surviving to higher altitudes

Each fenced area will have a mounted camera, 15 cameras in total, that
will take pictures on a daily basis and systematically archived. These
images will then be used for comparative review from a scientific
perspective and as visual feedback of organization into a narrative
that will carry the aesthetic power and meaning of the experiment and
the experience to a non-scientific audience, both in the Nevada Museum
of Art and in the field station itself.

We cannot predict, at the moment, which species will survive and do
well at all altitudes. The first year or two of experiments is to
determine this. The second and third year is to re-plant those that
had survived at all altitudes. The process will be recorded not only
by camera, but also by field observation.

more details below- if anyone else knows of art science initiatives at
ecological and environmental field
stations or marine labs please do bring them to our attention

let me also mention that we are doing in november on Creative
Disturbance a series of podcasts
on art and climate change as part of a participation in COP21- if
anyone has art and climate chante
podcasts they would like published please contact me- our art and
earth science channel run by

here are details of the Harrison's work

http://www.centerforforcemajeure.org/#introduction

Based at the University of California at Santa Cruz, The Center for
the Study of the Force Majeure brings together artists and scientists
to design ecosystem-adaptation projects in critical regions around the
world to respond to climate change.

of particular interest is

http://www.centerforforcemajeure.org/projects/#4-works

AT PRESENT, THE HARRISON STUDIO, THE NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART, AND THE
9,000-ACRE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAGEHEN CREEK RESEARCH STATION ARE
ENGAGED IN AND COMMITTED TO A 50-YEAR LONG RESEARCH PROJECT ("SAGEHEN:
A PROVING GROUND"). IT IS A WORK OF ART, A WORK OF SCIENCE, A WORK OF
BIO-REGIONAL PLANNING, AND A WORK THAT CALLS FOR POLICY CHANGE.

hello everybody,

in response to "Art and Science at environmental and ecological field
stations and marine labs":

we at the Bioartsociety in Finland run since 2009 a residency and a
specifically designed program at the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of
the Helsinki University in Lapland/Finland.

we also do workshops for students and professionals as well as our
biennial Field_Notes art and science field laboratory, which is actually
currently happening this week - > http://fieldnotes.hybridmatters.net/

you can see what we up to this week if you follow us on facebook:

Yasminers

Faerthen Felix has submitted this item on her radar over the past 5
years the are a growing number
of art-science initiatives at environmental and ecological field
stations and marine labs

are yasminers involved in similar efforts ? please tell us about your work !

Here is an input for your 5-year review…

#ArtSciConverge is bringing together field stations and marine labs,
arts funders, writers, artists, philosophers, cognitive scientists,
museums, STEM to STEAM educators, archivists, writers, and others to
advance the integration of arts and science at sites of long-term
environmental research. SEAD's "Steps to an Ecology of Networked
Knowledge and Innovation" (MIT Press, 2015), provides guidance to the
effort, identifying potential pitfalls and opportunities. Amy Ione of
SEAD presented on the paper at the #ArtSciConverge formation workshop
in June, 2015 at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, NV.

The goal of #ArtSciConverge is to map a path forward in which arts and
humanities activities contribute as they always have to science
outreach and education, but also to fundamental inquiry, discovery,
and analyses of the grand challenges facing social-ecological systems.

Our vision is that, within five years, it will be the norm and not the
exception to include artists, humanists and social neurobiologists
with ecologists on teams that are exploring and seeking to solve the
complex social and environmental problems we face in the coming
decades.
